“The Scariest Thing Under the Bed”
I’m calling this one The Scariest Thing Under the Bed. Don’t worry—it ends well—but in the moment, it was pure chaos.
It happened a few years ago, dead of night. I’m talking 2:00 AM. Pitch black. Not a single sound—until suddenly, my wife bolts upright and yells:
“BOB! BOB! BOB!!”
I shot awake like I’d been hit with a defibrillator. My heart was pounding, adrenaline spiked through the roof. In those split seconds, a hundred terrifying thoughts raced through my mind: Is the house on fire? Is someone breaking in? Did a tree crash through the window?
“What?! What?! What?! What is it??” I gasped.
She turned to me wide-eyed and said, “Some creature with a great big head just ran under our bed—and it does NOT belong in this house!”
Right at that moment, we heard this blood-curdling screech—our cat Zola. The sound cut through the silence like a knife. We both gasped. Oh no—something’s attacking her!
I was furious—this is HER house, I thought. This is her territory! And now some unknown monster is ambushing her under our bed?? It felt so wrong. I jumped up, turned the bedroom light on, and hit the ground, peering under the bed with the intensity of a man about to face a dragon.
I braced myself for whatever hideous thing was under there. Surely, Zola was mauled, or worse. I hesitated, took a deep breath, and peeked under the bed…
And what did I find?
Not two creatures. Not even one terrifying invader.
Just Zola. But with a giant paper bag stuck over her head.
That was the “great big head” my wife saw in the dark—our poor cat, stumbling around blind, panicked, crashing from room to room until she dove under the bed. The loud screech? Not from being attacked, but from sheer panic. When I pulled the bag off, she gave the softest, most relieved little “meow.”
I looked at her and laughed, “You silly, silly cat.”
Here’s the lesson:
Sometimes our problems seem massive and terrifying—monsters under the bed, so to speak. But when we turn on the light—the light of God’s Word—we realize it’s not a monster at all. It’s just a cat with a paper bag on its head.
It’s not that the problem isn’t real. But with the light of Scripture, we see it differently. We think clearly. We speak truth. And suddenly, fear loses its grip.
So whatever’s haunting you in the dark—flip on the light. Open the Word. Declare His promises.
And you just might find… it wasn’t a monster after all.
God bless you—and I’ll see you next time!
