The Blood Moons Explained!!
Having tracked this theme since the early 1970s, I’ve seen so many claims and predictions—one after another. The prophecy books implied that Jesus would return before 1988, based on the idea that Israel became a nation in 1948 and adding 40 years for a biblical generation—there you go. But it didn’t happen.
I remember there was even a book titled “88 Reasons Why Jesus Will Return in 1988.” I sometimes wonder if the author ever wrote a sequel: “88 Reasons Why I Meant Well When I Made That Claim.” I’m not sure. Then in the early 1980s, there was “The Jupiter Effect,” claiming that planetary alignment would create massive gravitational shifts, triggering the cataclysms described in Revelation. Again—didn’t happen.
Then came the Bible Codes… then this… then that.
And now—The Blood Moons.
These eclipses are being interpreted by some as signs. I can’t really see it myself, though I think many who teach it mean well. The current “Super Blood Moon” ideas being talked about are, in my opinion, far too passive to match the terrifying cosmic events described in scripture. I do still believe we could be the generation that sees the end. But even if we’re not, we’ll each see our end soon enough.
I firmly believe that the real blood moon and sun turned to darkness event will occur right before the return of the Lord.
“The sun shall be turned into darkness, and the moon into blood, before the great and terrible day of the Lord come.” — Joel 2:31, quoted again in Acts 2:20
“The sun will be darkened, and the moon will not give its light…” — Matthew 24:29
“...and the moon became as blood” — Revelation 6:12
Let’s be honest—eclipses don’t scare anybody. They're too passive. But I remember in 1980 when Mount St. Helens exploded, and I was three-quarters of a continent away. One night, I was riding a bike out in the wilderness. I looked up—and the Moon was red. Scientists said it was from volcanic ash and dust in the lower atmosphere. The light of the Moon passed through the particles, creating the reddish hue. And it lasted for months.
Here’s my guess: someday, somehow—though I can’t prove it—I suspect there will be not just one, but many massive volcanic eruptions across the Earth. And this will not just be nature—it will be God giving His final call, shaking people to turn to Him. The people of Earth will be terrified.
Alongside the verses about the Moon turning to blood and the Sun turning dark, we also read:
“Men's hearts failing them for fear, and for looking after those things which are coming on the earth: for the powers of heaven shall be shaken.” — Luke 21:26
People will be absolutely terrified, feeling like the world is literally falling apart. And in that panic, they’ll turn to Christians—who will be bold, steady, and full of light. In desperation, they’ll cry out, “What do we do? What do we do?!”
And the Body of Christ will declare with great boldness the words found in the book of Acts:
“And it shall come to pass, that whosoever shall call on the name of the Lord shall be saved.” — Acts 2:21
This is no coincidence. The verses about the blood moon and the invitation to call on the Lord in Acts 2 are side-by-side. It’s God's last call before the final day.
“Wake up! The time is near!”
But the current blood moon hype surrounding eclipses? It just doesn’t match the intensity of the biblical description. Eclipses are passive. They don’t wake people up. Also, these modern teachings don’t address the sun being darkened. If it plays out like I suggest—with multiple massive volcanoes going off—it could explain both phenomena. The ash could block out the sun and turn the moon red simultaneously.
Let’s not forget—God does use fear to wake people up.
Many haven’t considered that at the Cross of Jesus, God used such a moment of terror:
“And when the sixth hour was come, there was darkness over the whole land until the ninth hour.” — Mark 15:33
“Now when the centurion, and they that were with him, watching Jesus, saw the earthquake and those things that were done, they feared greatly, saying, Truly this was the Son of God.” — Matthew 27:54
Hollywood often portrays this as a rainstorm or an eclipse. But I think not. It was a supernatural darkness, likely from the hand of God Himself. And there was also a great earthquake. It scared people so badly, they beat their chests in shock. That centurion—the hardened Roman soldier—said, “Surely this was the Son of God!” That was fear. That was conviction. That was awakening.
And I suspect that in the years ahead, there will be a similar shaking—a great one. The pride of the arrogant will be brought low, and wise will be the person who humbles themselves and calls on the Name of the Lord.
Yes—some will still cling to their pride until their final breath. But at least they’ll have had the chance. God will have done everything possible to wake them from their spiritual slumber.
So, no—I don’t believe that modern blood moon eclipse teachings align with the mighty cataclysmic events described in Matthew 24, Joel 2, Revelation 6, and Acts 2.
Peace.
